Flooring planks and tiles need to be cut at edges, around doorways, and at corners. Offcuts shorter than ~30 cm usually can't be reused. A 10% waste factor covers a standard rectangular room; add 5% more for diagonal layouts, herringbone, or rooms with alcoves and bump-outs.
We use a typical box size of 1.86 m² for metric and 20 sq ft for US — close to industry averages for laminate and engineered hardwood. Check the actual coverage printed on the box at the store; if it differs, divide your total area (with waste) by the box coverage and round up.
Stairs need a different approach — measure each tread (the flat step) and riser (the vertical face) separately, then multiply by the number of steps. Add 15% waste. Most stair installations use a single piece of flooring per tread, so box counts may be higher than the calculator suggests.
Underlayment (the foam or rubber layer under laminate and some vinyl) is sold by the same square footage as the flooring itself, but without waste factor — order exactly the floor area. Hardwood nailed to a subfloor typically doesn't need underlayment; carpet requires a separate pad measured the same way.
